Anime, at first, was simply the Japanese word for 'animation'. Now, it is more commonly used in reference to Japanese
animation. Anime encompasses a wide variety of art styles, but it is generally recognized for characters with gravity-defying
hairstyles and huge eyes.
In Japan, anime is for all ages and covers all genres, such as:
(Final Fantasy Unlimited)
-drama (Ayashi no Ceres)
-historical fiction (Rurouni Kenshin, Peacemaker Kurogane)
-religious symbolism (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
-high school drama (Boys Be, Marmalade Boy)
(Slam Dunk, Prince of Tennis)
-sci-fi (Gundam Seed, Vandread)
-action (Naruto, Flame of Recca)
Also, anime comes in movies, tv shows, DVD series, and video games. It shows just as often
as any weekly drama would in the US, and there are never re-run episodes. This is because there is more anime than an entire
week's worth of broadcasting. This only touches upon the popularity of anime in Japan. Now, the demand for anime is increasing
all throughout the world.
